Student Spotlight 03: Jarek Peterson

Meet Jarek Peterson, a junior therapeutic recreation major from Jackson, Mississippi—also known as the newly crowned Mr. Jackson State University. With an undeniable passion for service and student involvement, Jarek is a shining example of what it means to lead with purpose. He’s a former president of the Men of Excellence, a member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc., and serves as the Social Chair for the Special Olympics program at Jackson State, where he plans impactful community service events.

Jarek’s leadership journey was inspired by his faith and his desire to help others. “The leader in me was already embedded,” he shares, “but God wanted me to use my leadership for His glory.” That sense of calling pushes him to lead with authenticity and heart.

Like many student leaders, Jarek has faced unexpected challenges—like event mishaps or last-minute changes—but he’s learned the importance of having a plan B and staying adaptable. His leadership experiences have also sharpened his time management, communication, and organizational skills.

His advice to other Black students looking to step into leadership? “Be authentically you. Don’t compare yourself to anyone else. When you’re authentic, people naturally come toward you.”
